I for one would never have known how to contact you to discuss Phi Delt issues (along with countless other examples) if it wasn't for FB... although I doubt if I qualify as the adult demographic Kirkpatrick is talking about since FB blossomed right as I was leaving school so I am presumably part of the student population upon which it initially grew.

So you know, this:

What he misses here is the movement toward social media aggregators (FriendFeed, Lijit, SocialThing) and OpenID that enables content to be shared between platforms and not limited to one site or the other.

Is the beginning of Web 3.0.

At least according to Eric Schmidt of a little website called Google.

Good post David. I appreciated that you got a little personal with FNL. I'm not a fan of much on TV but there are some die-hard FNL fans out there.

And if you like the music in FNL, make sure you check out Explosions in the Sky. Def the best concert I've ever been to.

Dave, it's easy to say that FB is dumb. I agree with you that it does take some flailing around to see what the value is for each user.

I, for example, like my friends' status updates. I am so busy, and for some odd reason I feel personally connected when I see someone is on the lake, or looking forward to the weekend (very common), or being their delightful clever selves in 50 characters.

Last night was a great example. I wrote in my status that I was just back from the ER with my kid. 5 minutes after posting, my sister in Indiana called to see what was up. Turns out my nephew saw my status update and called over his shoulder, "Hey mom, Johnny has stitches."

Now that is both funny and wonderful.

I don't mind if people don't get FB, but I do mind if they don't get why other people do.

Your friend,
Middle aged facebook user
